My name is Aya, and I am a proud Calgary-born Muslim woman of Lebanese descent. I am a graduate of Yorkville University’s Master of Counselling Psychology program (2025), Royal Roads University’s Professional Communication program (2021), and SAIT’s Journalism program (2020). I am also a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC, 2025) through the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), reflecting my commitment to ethical, evidence-informed practice.
I want to be Aya El-kadri, not just a writer or counsellor — me.
Growing up in Calgary, I often felt like an “old soul.” I was more interested in reading than other children, often feeling misunderstood by my peers. Books became my refuge, and I gravitated toward stories that explored the complexity of human nature. I read Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women years before the “best movie of the year” was even a thought, and I read Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, and Robert Frost long before high school.
My passion for understanding people led me to study psychology from an early age, though I did not have the tools to truly help others with what I was learning. Over time, people began to confide in me, sharing their struggles and seeking advice. I was always happy to listen, but I knew I could do more than just provide a listening ear. I wanted to offer real solutions and insights — to help people not only feel heard but also empowered to heal and grow.
As a counsellor, I see myself as a facilitator rather than someone who provides all the answers. Empathy is key in my work, as I believe that sometimes, all a person truly needs is someone to listen — to truly hear their thoughts, feelings, and struggles. I understand that change cannot be forced – a person will not change unless they feel the need to do so and have the tools to make that change. Guided by professional standards, including those of the CCPA, I aim to help clients develop those tools — to enable them to heal and move forward in a way that feels right for them.
When I am not working with clients or diving into the world of psychology, you will likely find me writing, reading, exploring new ideas or only Allah knows what. I still carry the passion for storytelling that has shaped my life, and I hope to create stories and resources that connect with others in a meaningful way. I plan to add to this website as I continue to develop and learn.
This portfolio reflects some of what I have done, but it does not even scratch the surface — the most meaningful parts of my work cannot be shown, only experienced.
